Hey Dave...
I have the exact same car (it's even white) and race SOLO II in the washington DC area. I have a question about limited slip. Do you know if there is a way to find out if my car is equipped with LSD or not? Apparently there were a number that came with LSD from the factory independant of the available packages. - Thanks

My sensei always taught that there's only one choke in judo, and that's hadaka-jime. The shime-waza that you describe on http://www.sff.net/people/dburkhead/jujijime.htm are actually all strangles. What's the difference? Strangles cut off the blood flow in the carotid arteries on the side of the throat; chokes apply pressure and "discomfort" to the windpipe.
Something else my sensei taught me is that the word "kuzushi" translates literally as "opportunity". It's almost poetic, isn't it?

Here's the answer I sent to Mark Webb by private email:
The applicable rules are that the springs must be of the same basic type (coil, leaf, torsion bar, etc.), so in the cases of SP and STS, the "coilovers" are limited to corners of the car that originally came with coil springs. The rule that allows coilovers in the case of SP is 14.8.A which includes "change or modification of springs or coil spring perches. This adds the further restriction of the shock being inside the spring in stock configuration. Thus the "coilover" is a "change or modification of coil spring perch." The same wording is used for STS and STX in 17.8.A.
One thing to remember, my list is not intended as a guild for planning car modification. Instead it's intended as an aid for answering questions "My car has XXX modifications; what class is it in?"

Coil overs permitted N Y Y Y Y Y
pg. 98, section 14.8,2003 rules,SCCA National Solo states that "must use original spring attachment point".
Help me with this. I would like to use coilovers in the street prepared or STX class and do not see this as legal.
Thanks,
Mark

WRT driver restraints in street prepared, it is not necessary to retain the OEM seat belts if you are using aftermarket belts - you can remove the belts and inertia reels.
Also, you can add an LSD to a street prepared car.

My friends and I are in college making a magazine that we plan on taking public, but we could use more knowledge. We can't pay much because we are in college, but we wil give you article credit and a weblink on our magazine contributior's page. We are looking for multiple pieces of work. Our theme is that fighting isn't pretty, so be aware of what choices you make. I have more questions if intersted..I really like your site sir, it would be great if we had some of your training in the magazine.

Nice site. Space may be the final frontier but I think unmanned space exploration provides as much info at far less cost. The trend toward unmanned aircraft and ground vehicles is growing in the military, as well. The Israeli astronaut may be remembered most for his death in Columbia...but his most important contribution to mankind was his 1981 F-16 raid on that Iraqi nuclear power plant.
Nice family, and judo hobby, and of course-the SCCA connection.

The April 30th deadline for tire models does not apply to STS or STX. For the other classes, which allow R tires or true race tires, the total number of tire brands and models is small enough that SCCA can keep track of them. This just isn't practical for the street tire classes.
BTW: This is a very useful resource. Thanks!

Nice idea! Just a couple of comments. In the ITS table, you are comparing net HP readings to gross readings in some cases. One example is the Nissan 240 Z listed as 150 HP. That's gross- net is more like 130. This would make a better comparison with the newer cars. The BMW 87-91 325IS is listed at I think 135 HP. This car's stock rating is 172 net HP. That would change your power/weight ratio quite a bit!

For the improvement of randori, you should learn and practice 'Kumi Kata(gripping opponent's gi at your advantage)'. There is a saying that kumi kata decides 50% of win or lose.

In general, the attempt to list any item for any class is confusing sometimes. The major categories make this easier to spot, but I'd try to sort within the major categories so all the similar things are together and someone can make sense of it if they are in a higher preparation allowance category.
Street Prepared corrections:
you can change steering wheel even if it has an airbag in the original
wheel stud or bolt - I think this is allowed
tire widths up to 225 are OK (as are larger ones) - this is confusing.
don't need to weld spring perches - spring perches listed twice - is confusing
any shock absorber
any brake line
any proportioning valve
any master cylinder?
any carburator then you say no non-stock carburetor
SM doesn't require 140 treadwear

The Tires section should show that Stock CAN run any tire diameter or width "as long as it doesn't extend past the fender flares" or something like that. The tires are completely open for width and diameter.
In the ECU section, you should probably include "Boost" in the parentheses. "No changes to traction control or BOOST" since there are forced induction cars allowed in STS and STX.

Hey David. Nice site. I am a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and have been doing so for three years. One thing I can tell you for the sankaku jime from the failed tomoe nage is that once you have your legs locked in a "triangle", you can use your hands to push his head down to make the choke much stronger. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me. Keep up the good work.

After some years doing Judo I can tell you that for the most part you are right on track. You really have hit on the core of all of the aspects of judo. Practice is the key in falling, and in all aspects of the art. One suggestion that I might make on your Tai-otoshi is to try to keep your hands in front as you turn. This makes it more of a push than a pull. Pushes are much stronger.

As you block the left knee of the attacker(using your right leg), you can pivot clockwise until you essentially fall down face forward, ONTO your opponent, thus scoring an unexpected IPPON !

I like the way you give points of view on the various types of throws and submissions. If possible, I think a good addition would be pictures of the throws, holddowns and submissions so that newer players can get an idea of something they may not have seen before. Great informational site though. =)

i loved your web page. i feel like i know you better and i understand your point of view much better. i am sorry we got off to a bad start. but with over 25 years of m.a. i get a little short with people who have trained in only one style but yet make judgements concerning other styles. i am glad your life turned around. the right woman usally helps. your are a true inspiration of how to overcome difficulty. good luck in your judo career.

here is my creative input regarding tomoe nage.
not only do you suggest sangkaku jime but you can also complete the tomo nage, drop one leg in mid flight and land the guy into your juji gatame.

Intersting that you felt awkward in the company of 1st Kyu players in a randori session. You will probably of discovered by know that comming to grips with the best players in the dojo is the best way to to improve your technique.
Always remember you are not fighting the belt, just the man and all men can be overcome.

Saw your site listed in the discusssions over on Judoinfo, so I thought I'd check your site out. I'm working on my own site, and I think I'll steal your idea of "What's New" on the first page. I'll link to you when I do it though, so it won't be a real theft! If you like SF, have you tried "The Man Who Never Missed" by Steve Perry? It's a series of books, and plenty of MA mixed in.

Great site man!Taiotoshi is a great move to master it is so simple but yet so effective, I lost my first competitive fight to that little peach! But what you must remember is and I find this effective is that when the leg comes across and you pull down, try to pop your leg back a bit so you get a extra lift and they go down quicker!Once again great site man!Taiotoshi rules!

Hi Dave, great place, only got here via juji-gatame.
One of the key points in this technique is for tori to squeeze the knees together to ensure that uke cannot reove the arm and retaining it in the palm-up position. Once the knees touch it's usually game over. Keep up the good work. Pete

Interesting bio. Hopefully I can help you bring it up to date one day. Remember, the experiences that we have in life can be either seen as good or bad. The most sucessfull people use even the disapointing ones as an education to further our position. Although I was glad to leave the Navy, The lessons I learned there and the dicipline I was forced to endure has followed me my whole life and I feel that it has given me an advantage over most of the people that I have interfaced with.
see you later
